Why Trenchless Technology Is Transforming Pipeline Infrastructure Across the GCC — And Why Your Next Project Cannot Afford to Ignore It

By Scorpion Arabia for Contracting Services | May 2026

Every time a contractor opens the ground to lay a pipeline, they open a world of problems. Budget overruns. Traffic chaos. Environmental damage. Weeks of delay. Communities disrupted. Permits stacked on permits.

There is a smarter way. And the contractors who discover it first are winning more bids, delivering faster, and protecting their margins while competitors are still stuck in the trench.

Scorpion Arabia is that smarter way.

The Real Cost of Digging a Trench

For decades, the default approach to pipeline installation was simple: dig a trench, lay the pipe, fill it back in. It worked. But the true costs were far greater than most project budgets ever acknowledged.

Road restoration alone can consume 30 to 60 percent of a project’s total budget on urban crossings. Add traffic management, community disruption, environmental remediation, utility diversions, and reinstatement works — and what looked like a straightforward pipeline job becomes a logistical and financial nightmare.

Then there are the crossings that simply cannot be open-cut at all. Rivers. Active highways. Railway lines. Sea floors. Environmentally protected coastal zones. These locations demand a completely different approach — one that installs infrastructure without ever disturbing the surface above.

The numbers tell the story clearly:

  • Up to 70% cost saving compared to open-cut excavation on equivalent crossings
  • Crossings completed in days, not weeks or months
  • Zero surface disruption — roads, traffic, and communities remain completely unaffected
  • Full capability in environments where open-cut excavation is impossible or prohibited

The contractors who understand this are winning projects their competitors cannot price competitively. The EPC firms who have Scorpion Arabia in their supply chain are submitting bids with trenchless cost advantages that open-cut competitors simply cannot match.

That advantage is available to you right now.

Service 01 — Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

Horizontal Directional Drilling is the cornerstone of modern trenchless pipeline construction. A drill rig steers a pilot bore underground along a precise, pre-engineered path — beneath the river, the road, or the sea — and then pulls the product pipeline back through that bore in a single controlled operation. The surface above remains completely untouched throughout.

What HDD Can Cross — Without Touching the Surface

  • Rivers, canals, and open-sea marine crossings
  • Roads and highways — without a single lane closure
  • Sand dunes and desert terrain — proven for Saudi Aramco in the Shaybah Region, Empty Quarter
  • Beneath existing pipeline corridors and congested infrastructure networks
  • Environmentally sensitive coastal zones and protected areas
  • Urban and highly congested locations where surface disruption is not an option

Our HDD Fleet — One of the Largest in the GCC

Scorpion Arabia owns and operates 13 HDD rigs covering every scale of project:

  • 600 Ton — Ultra-heavy, major infrastructure and marine bores
  • 500 Ton — Heavy long-distance crossings
  • 360 Ton — Large diameter carbon steel pipe installations
  • 240 & 220 Ton (×3 units) — Medium crossings, dual-deployment programs
  • 90 & 135 Ton (×3 units) — Flexible mid-range operations
  • 30 & 50 Ton (×4 units) — Urban, compact, and utility crossings

Supporting equipment: tooling from 10 to 62 inches in diameter, 8 walk-over locating systems, 9 mud mixing units, 6 mud cleaning systems, and 3 mud pumps.

Proven at the Highest Level — 2025 Highlights

NEOM Sindalah Island Sea Crossings: 6 carbon steel pipelines (14″–20″ OD), 2,700 meters each, across open sea. Total installed: 16,200 meters.

Jazan Saudi Electric Cable Landing: 6 HDPE pipes (400–500mm OD) via HDD sea crossing. Total installed: 4,320 meters.

Ongoing Aramco Programs: Currently executing HDD for MACE (48″ CS, 600m), Kalpataru (2×4″ HDPE, 9,731m), Bin Quraya (32″ CS, 2,598m), and multiple other Aramco subcontracts.

We are not a company building its first major project. We are a company with an active, proven, expanding portfolio — and the capacity to take on yours.

Service 02 — Micro-Tunneling & Pipe Jacking

When project depth, diameter requirements, or ground conditions push beyond what HDD can achieve, Micro-Tunneling is the answer. This is remote-controlled, laser-guided pipeline installation at its most sophisticated.

A Tunnel Boring Machine is launched from a pre-constructed drive shaft and advances through the ground with millimeter-level precision — steered entirely from a surface control station, with no worker ever entering the bore. As the machine advances, pipe segments are jacked in behind it, creating a permanently installed pipeline at the exact grade and alignment required. Excavated material is removed as a slurry, maintaining face pressure and ground stability throughout — including deep installations below the water table, with up to 3.0 Bar of face pressure capability.

Why Micro-Tunneling Changes Everything

Precision that HDD cannot match. Laser-guided steering delivers millimeter-accurate grade control across every meter — critical for gravity-fed sewers, storm drainage, and process pipelines where exact gradient is non-negotiable.

Safety without compromise. Fully remote-controlled from the surface. No confined space entry. No worker exposure to underground hazards. The safest excavation method available.

Any ground, any depth. Clay, rock, mixed face, gravel, waterlogged soil — the AVN system adapts to all conditions without compromising accuracy or production.

Works where nothing else can. Deep installations, high water table environments, locations requiring precise hydraulic gradient — exactly the conditions where Micro-Tunneling excels and other methods fail.

Scorpion Arabia’s equipment covers the full range from AVN 800 to AVN 3500.

📋 NEED A MICRO-TUNNELING METHODOLOGY STATEMENT?

Service 03 — Composite Wrapping & Coating Protection

A pipeline is only as strong as its weakest coating. During HDD installation, the external FBE coating faces extreme abrasive forces across hundreds of meters of bore. Without protection, that coating fails — and corrosion follows. Corrosion discovered years later in a buried pipeline costs exponentially more to remediate than the original wrapping would have cost to apply.

Scorpion Arabia applies the Fibalite CMPFibalite composite wrapping system — an Aramco-approved solution that protects FBE coatings through the most demanding HDD pull-back operations.

Applications Include:

Abrasive Resistant Overlay (ARO): Full pipe wrapping for HDD and micro-tunneling pull-back — Aramco approved, field proven across multiple Aramco projects.

Refinery Wear Pads: Above-ground pipeline protection at support points — preventing wear and vibration damage without pipe replacement.

Pipeline Field Repairs: Emergency structural rehabilitation restoring full pressure integrity without excavation.

Field-Weld Joint Coating: Seamless corrosion protection at every girth weld — the most common corrosion initiation point on any pipeline.

Storage Tank Repairs: Anti-corrosion rehabilitation for above-ground storage — faster, cheaper, and less disruptive than plate replacement.

Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) Prevention: Sealing pipe surfaces from moisture ingress beneath thermal insulation — addressing one of the costliest failure modes in process piping.

Underwater and Offshore Protection: Subsea pipeline coating and repair for marine assets.

Service 04 — HDPE Tight-Fit Lining: Rehabilitate Without Replacing

Not every aging or failing pipeline needs to be replaced. In many cases it can be fully rehabilitated from the inside — at a fraction of the cost, time, and disruption of replacement.

Originally developed by British Gas in the early 1980s, HDPE Tight-Fit Lining has become the gold standard for pipeline rehabilitation worldwide. A High-Density Polyethylene liner, with an outer diameter slightly larger than the internal diameter of the host pipe, is temporarily reduced in size, pulled through the existing pipeline, and allowed to revert to its original dimensions — forming a tight, seamless, corrosion-proof barrier inside the host pipe. No excavation. No replacement. Full function restored within 24 hours.

The Business Case Is Compelling

Consider what replacing a buried pipeline actually involves: excavation across the full length, road reinstatement, traffic management, utility relocations, weeks of operational shutdown. The cost can be ten to twenty times greater than HDPE lining for an equivalent pipeline length.

HDPE Tight-Fit Lining delivers full rehabilitation through a single access point — eliminating internal corrosion, improving flow characteristics, and restoring structural integrity for a fraction of the replacement cost.

Where HDPE Lining Is Applied:

  • Water mains and distribution pipelines
  • Gas transmission and distribution systems
  • Oil and product pipelines
  • Sewer and drainage pipelines
  • Mining and process slurry lines
  • Pipe diameters from 100mm to 1,200mm (4″ to 48″)
  • Installation distances from 40 to 1,200 meters per pull

💡 AGEING PIPELINE ON YOUR PROJECT? DON’T REPLACE IT. RELINE IT.

If you have a corroded, degraded, or failing pipeline that you were planning to excavate and replace — talk to us first. In many cases, HDPE Tight-Fit Lining can deliver equivalent results at 30–50% of the replacement cost, with a fraction of the programme impact. One conversation could save your client hundreds of thousands. 📞 Call for a free technical assessment: +966-563464465 📧 info@scorpion-contracting.com We assess your pipeline details, confirm lining suitability, and provide a commercial proposal — no cost, no obligation.

Why Scorpion Arabia — What Makes the Difference

In a market where many contractors claim trenchless capability, what distinguishes Scorpion Arabia is the combination of factors that are genuinely difficult to replicate.

The Future Is Trenchless — And the Window to Act Is Now

Across the GCC, infrastructure development is accelerating at a scale the region has never seen before. NEOM. Vision 2030. The expansion of Saudi Arabia’s oil and gas network. Utility buildout across new economic zones. All of it requires pipelines. Thousands of kilometers of them.

Every pipeline that crosses a road, a river, a coastline, or a populated area presents a choice: open the ground and accept the costs and disruption that come with it, or drill beneath it and deliver the infrastructure faster, cleaner, and at significantly lower total cost.

The contractors who choose trenchless — and who choose the right trenchless partner — are the contractors who are winning in this market.

Scorpion Arabia’s rigs are in the field today. Our team is ready. The question is whether your project is next.
